History of PS3: The story so far

Play Station 3 is the latest games console from Sony Computer Entertainment and succeeds two of the most popular games consoles ever made, the Play Station 1 and 2. The official abbreviation is PS3 for the console and is part of the seventh generation of games consoles like the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii.

The biggest distinguishing feature of the PS3 is the on-line multiplayer gaming facilities which gives you the ability to play against a number of friends through the Play Station Network, which enhances the play through media delivery service, which allows unique gamer profile facilities like instant messaging, email, voice and video chat and internet browsing with Google search engine. The PS3 console, compares well to its rivals as it also has Blu-ray facilities and was the first on the market in many countries.

The PS3 console was released to a frenzy of fans and was a global instant success for gamers but was not entirely considered a success by industry specialists, as there appeared to be some compatibility issues, which Play Station have since worked out. The recent models are far more aesthetically pleasing when you compare PS3 slim bundles to earlier models and they have made a slim line model to replace it with a new design.

The first models had various sized hard drives and so each model was known by the size of the hard drive PlayStation 3 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB and 160GB were the same except for the colour surrounding their USB ports and each PS3 console bundles included two Six-axis controllers and a Dualshock 3 controller after June 2008 along with all the relevant cables and a game. The new styled PS3 Slim console is set to create another global buzz as the release has seen a rejuvenation of the Play Station 3 brand and put right some of the minor technical flaws originally found. The PS3 80GB console is still being sold but the price has been dropped.
